Hill Pitches Tigers to 6-0 Win in 4th Wood-Bat Classic
|
April 29, 2003 O'FALLON, Mo. - Junior RHP Danny Hill (Weimer, Texas) threw 7-1/3 shutout innings in a 6-0 win over St. Louis in the fourth annual Wood Bat Classic, held Tuesday at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O'Fallon, Mo. Hill (3-1) scattered three hits over his season-longest outing, walking just a pair and striking out a season-high nine. Mizzou (29-15) has now won 14 straight against the Billikens (15-24). Junior RF Kyle Johnson (Omaha, Neb.) hit a two-run homer to right in the eighth inning. His fourth shot of the season was just the second over the Hughes Ballpark fence in the four games of the wood-bat series. Junior Lee Laskowski (Clayton, Mo.) hit the first home run in 2001. A four-run third started the Tigers in the right direction after the Bilikens' Jake Baumgartner (5-4) walked senior CF Jayce Tingler (Smithville, Mo.) and balked him to second. A bunt single advanced Tingler to third, and he stole home while freshman 3B Zane Taylor (Kirksville, Mo.) stalled a failed pickoff attempt at first. Junior Cody Ehlers (Stillwater, Okla.) and junior C Brad Flanders (Smithville, Mo.) both had RBI singles in the inning.
While the Tigers took the lead, Hill was cruising, not allowing a runner past second base before sophomore Travis Wendte (Moore, Okla.) and junior Mark Alexander (Independence, Mo.) combined to pitch the final 1-2/3 without allowing a baserunner.
"Our pitchers got ahead in the count tonight. They didn't give SLU much to hit," Head Coach Tim Jamieson said. "Danny Hill had a great night, and all three guys pitched really well. The wood bats suit our game well; we got our bunts down, we hit-and-run well. Every time we're successful, we execute the small ball." The Tigers return home on Wednesday by hosting Southeast Missouri State at 6 p.m. at Taylor Stadium/Simmons Field. |
